FlyFishNM at a Glance

At Fly Fish NM we know that the future of our great State lies with our youth.  Fly Fish NM is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit charity created to provide Fly Fishing opportunities for NM youth who would otherwise not be able to participate in this unique and exciting fishing experience due to economic inability, or limited access to the outdoors.

Our goal is to teach our youth the importance of preserving the environment and our limited natural resources, the basics of fly fishing, how to identify fish species, the importance of conserving fish habitats, and how to identify insects and aquatic bugs that make up a fish's diet.

Preserving New Mexico's beautiful streams and lakes for future generations is necessary. We wish to instill an attitude of respect for the natural beauty of our State and its limited resources.

Conservation and Preservation begins by exposing New Mexico's youth to the natural beauty of New Mexico's rivers, streams and lakes, and developing the attitude of preserving that beauty.

If you have a Youth Group who may be interested please call (505) 615-2844

HOW THIS WORKS: All fly fishing camps are one-day camps.

Our Goal is inclusion, and making outdoor activities accessible to New Mexico Youth.

Caring for our great outdoors is important, so each participant starts off by cleaning trash from the fishing habitat and area. Clean Air, Land, and Water are vital to our sport.

Each participant will receive a complete fly rod and reel combo kit to keep.  Participants are instructed on fishing rules, how to set up their gear, casting techniques, how to tie on a fly, habitat preservation and good stewardship for the outdoors.  Fishing begins thereafter.

OUR VOLUNTEERS MAKE OUR COMMUNITY SPECIAL!

Special thanks to Sebastian Martinez and Chad Smith from Big Brothers Big Sisters (Albuquerque) & Thanks to Greg Reynolds from the U.S. Forest Service.

Thanks to all our volunteers:  Mario Atencio, Greg Richardson, Shawn Canada, Curtis Ortiz, John Lucero, Caden Ortiz, Denise Ortiz, Hyangmi Yi & Dennis Segura (NM Game & Fish).

Fly Fishing Opportunities For Youth and Conservation of Fly Fishing Habitats

Fly Fish NM & the Espanola YMCA Teen Center teamed up on August 8, 2021 for a fly fishing outing at the El Vado Ranch along the Chama River. The diverse group included participants from Mesa Vista High School, Espanola High School, McCurdy High School, Pojoaque High School, Carlos Vigil Mid-School and Victory Faith School.

The seminar took place along the beautiful Chama River. The participants were eager to get started.  Upon arriving at the El Vado Ranch, participants cleaned the riverbank and fishing habitat of all trash as part of their commitment to preserve this beautiful fishing habitat. Once they turned in their trash bag, each participant received a complete fly fishing rod and reel combo kit to keep for future fishing adventures.

As with all groups, general fishing rules were discussed and a New Mexico Game & Fish Proclamation rule book was given to each participant.  The group, along with their mentors from the YMCA were then instructed on equipment set-up, casting techniques, and how to tie on a fly with a special knot

Murky water made for tough fishing.

OUR NEXT OUTING:

DONORS LIKE YOU make these events possible.  Each participant is provided with their own fly rod, reel, fly box, and other equipment  to keep - so they can enjoy the wonderful sport of fly fishing for years to come.

We hope you will consider a donation to this cause.  Let's get our children outdoors!

Fly Fishing Opportunities For Youth and Conservation of Fly Fishing Habitats

Fly Fish NM & the MORA CREATIVE COUNCIL YOUTH COMMITTEE (MCCYC) teamed up for a Fly Fishing Summer Camp on July 21, 2002 at Coyote Creek State Park in Beautiful Northern New Mexico. This resilient group of youth and their mentors and parents had to endure the turmoil and devastation caused by the Hermits Peak Fire, and this seminar and this fly fishing camp was a welcome distraction from the devastation that surrounds them.

This diverse and eager group of 20 youth were ready to learn.  The group included youth ranging from ages 6-18 and included participants from Mora High School, Mora Middle School, West Las Vegas High School, Home Schooling, Mora Elementary School, Memorial Middle School and Sierra Vista School.

The seminar took place along the beautiful Coyote Creek Stream.  The stream was running, but due to the abundant moisture in this area, it was fully overgrown with vegetation and unaccessible.  Participants selected a different fishing location, but that was hampered by a rain burst that ended the day.

The participants were attentive to instruction and left with their own fly rod combo, tippet spool, strike indicator, and a box of Trout flies that mimic bugs in the area. Participants cleaned the riverbank and fishing habitat of all trash as part of their commitment to preserve this beautiful fishing habitat. Once they turned in their bag of trash, each participant received a complete fly fishing rod and reel combo kit to keep for future fishing adventures.

As with all groups, general fishing rules were discussed and the participants were advised to go to The New Mexico Game & Fish Website in order to access the on-line fishing proclamation and Rules.

As part of their instruction, participants were instructed on equipment set-up, casting techniques, and how to tie on a fly with a special knot.

The August 3, 2022 fly fishing camp was coordinated by Debbie Pike of the Federal Wildlife Service in conjunction with the MCYCC and Fly Fish NM.  Eighteen (18) youth participated in this event.  After instruction, the group traveled to a pond just North of the Coyote Creek State park to practice their skills.  Several participants caught fish and released them.
